The Hotel Split is a beachfront hotel located about a 5 minute drive from the center of Split and Diocletian’s Palace. You should call the hotel ahead of time if you are arriving via car for precise driving directions. The signs off the main street to Hotel Split lead you down a road that abruptly ends due to construction. After driving around for 20 minutes we finally found an alternative access road to the hotel. The hotel offers 3 star accommodations in one wing of the hotel (which is a bit older) and a newly constructed wing that offers 4 star accommodations. The hotel is the largest and, seemingly, the most popular hotel in Split. The hotel offers the same fare of amenities that most large hotels in Croatia offer: a casino, night club, 2 restaurants, private beach, spa/sauna facilities and a 24 hour business center.

We stayed for 3 nights in the new 4 star wing. We had a double room, king bed and balcony with a view of the Adriatic Sea a short distance away. The rooms were comfortable, not too spacious and they offered turn down service every afternoon with a couple boxes of chocolate. The walk to the private beach is a bit of a trek down several flights of stairs, but it was do-able. One note, while the hotel might say it is a private beach in which they offer a covered area for guests, there really was no way to prevent locals (especially the loud younger teens) from using the same facilities offered to the guests, nor was the hotel staff enforcing these rules. We actually overheard a Croatian guest yelling at the young teens to be quiet and complaining to a staff member. It really didn’t bother us, but do not expect privacy, especially on the weekends.

The only real issue we had with the hotel was with the front desk staff. They were not overly rude but just not very helpful or informative. Moreover, since this hotel is so large, do not expect friendly personal service. The business center was first quoted to us as being free of charge to all guests, so we used it quite a bit during our stay. Only to find out upon checkout that they charge per the hour and they were tracking our time. They didn’t even let us know, upon exiting the business center every time that they were doing this (there were no meters on the computers). We ended up negotiating down the charge to about 30% of the total but the whole process just left a bad impression.

Overall, you won’t go wrong with Hotel Split and the location is great. However, there are many choices for lodging in the area that will probably be less expensive and the staff more helpful. The smaller Hotel More, where we entered to ask for directions, is located just a bit further down the beach, seemed really nice and the staff was very friendly and helpful with directions.
