352738 4 Location 511941 <p>Attended a one-day international (ODI) match between Australia and New Zealand at the Bellerive Oval.&nbsp; The Oval is beautifully situated with views of the River Derwent on one side, and the hillside residences of Bellerive on the other.</p><p>ODI&nbsp;matches were developed&nbsp;to ensure completion in a one-day time frame (which in other sports is not an issue, but remember this is cricket).&nbsp; Each team bats one inning, which consists&nbsp;of&nbsp;50 "overs" (300 balls)&nbsp;or 10 wickets (outs in baseball), whichever comes first.&nbsp;</p><p>No bowler is allowed&nbsp;to bowl more than 10 overs, so&nbsp;at least 5 of each team's 11 players have to&nbsp;bowl.&nbsp;&nbsp;(Imagine if this rule&nbsp;were applied in baseball!)&nbsp;&nbsp;Due to this rule, player versatility is important on one-day teams.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Leading up to the match, there was a lot of press about the fact that the authorities would expel any fans starting chants or&nbsp;the "mexican wave."&nbsp; Apparently the&nbsp;fans didn't care, as "Captain Cricket" and others initiated&nbsp;many chants, and the wave circled the crowd of 16,000 strong 6 consecutive times at one point.</p><p>Australia ended up beating the Kiwis pretty easily.&nbsp; Highlights included seeing Cameron White and Andrew Symonds (who has become my favorite player) power the Aussies to a solid score, and witnessing&nbsp;New Zealand's Shane Bond record a rare "hat trick."&nbsp; This is when a bowler records three wickets on three consecutive bowled balls.&nbsp; I later learned this was only the third time a hat trick has occured&nbsp;in Australia in an ODI match.&nbsp;</p> 2007-01-22T22:04:54-08:00 948142087 2006-01-13T16:00:00-08:00 0 -9223372036854775790 210339 3453474 352738 0 184479 0.126813539231928 2006-01-13T16:00:00-08:00 Published 90.0 Tonk the Kiwis 2007-01-24T18:35:38-08:00 93227 0
