Cost: 300b p person

Location: Bangkok - Nong Khai ( North Eastern boarder town to Loas)

Time: 12hrs

The train trip was a cheap way to see a lot of the country side in one trip. You could easily stop at several towns along the way however we decided to go straight to Nong Khai to keep within our time limits here. The train was the old deisel with squat toilets and staff who would come round offering traditional thai food or alternatively you could purchase food from locals as they ran up and down the sides of the trains at most stations yelling out what they had to offer. Food was cheap (30b on the train) for a decent meal and 20b for water. Initially I thought all the seats were the same (old brisbane diesel train style only individual seats) but after walking to the end of the train when we were bored we found most of the train was 3rd class while our part was 2nd class. The difference was that the seats did not have as much padding and could not recline.

The worst part was the soot that would fly in the widows as most of the lands around the train line had been recently back burned. We came out of the train feeling quite dirty and looking for a decent toilet to take a dump in where you didn't have to worry about falling over while u squatted.

The best part was that you could ride the side of the train or sit on the step of the entry doors while the train was moving! And people found it interesting to see "Furungs" or white people.
