You buy the pass in multiple day increments. I bought the 4 day pass for 40 E. The pass gets you into a number of museums and monuments for free and you don't have to wait in the long lines to buy tickets except at Notre Dam. It is well worth the money. The museum was a great lead in to the Louvre. It had a lot of beautiful sculptures and some famous paintings from the impressionists.
