The Eagle's Nest was built as a birthday present for Hitler and because of this it is a great place for anybody interested in history to visit. However it is not just an interesting place to visit because of it's history but it is a great place to visit because of the amazing scenery that surrounds it. You arrive at the visiter centre in the middle of the Bovarian Alps and you catch a bus up a mountain. From here you use a lift built inside the mountain to take you the rest of the way to the Eagles Nest, (which in itself is a great experience).

The Eagle's Nest is set out very much like museum and gives a great deal of information about the history of the building and it's Nazi roots. However, even if you are not really interested in this (but even if you are) the scenery on it's own would make the trip worthwhile. You can spend a good deal of time just admiring the view and taking photographs.

I would leave a few hours to visit the Eagles Nest but you will need a full day to do everything in the surrounding area. It is defiently worth having a stroll around the town of Berchesgaden, which is at the bottom of the mountain. There is not much to do here but it is a nice little Bovarian town, and it has a few small, but interesting shops and cafe's. (Which sell the best Iced Tea).

Also in the area are the Salt Mines, where you can take a tour down into the mines. This is an absolute must, as you don't just get the normal tour where soembody walks round with you and gives you information, you get a small train ride, a boat trip across an underground lake and slides. This tour takes a few hours and is not at all expensive.
