<p> Alcatraz Island is an amazing place, where you can spend at least half a day, if not an entire one. There are two different tours you can take, the historical talk (an historical tour about the island pre dating the state penitentiary era, very interesting), and the prison tour. This tour is done very well, you get a set of headphones and you walk around following the instructions given to you on the recording. The recording also provides a detailed account into the prisons history, explanations of each section of the prison and some very interesting stories about prisoners, riots and escapes. If your really lucky you might meet a former inmate, like I did, who was doing a book signing at the time.</p><p> Alcatraz is a must do if you are visiting San Francisco, a bit crowded, but totally worth it and very good value for money. To make sure you can get over there, buy tickets the day before from, I think it is pier 29, it will be close to there anyway. If you dont they may have sold out on the day you want to go. </p>
