What an Island!!!!! =P

From San Francisco, California in San Francisco, United States on Dec 29 '04

Well...what can i say? Welcome to absolute isolation and a world away from the comforts of home and a beautiful city.. where all that is lying between you and home is water, water and yep you guessed it more water. =p

This is Alcatraz Island, or the 'Rock'  as it is famously known as! Where Americas greatest known gangster Al Capone and Robert  Stroud 'Birdman' were sent to serve time.

This place is amazing and full of history and stories to tell such as the great escape of four inmates who made a boat out of raincoats only to find themselves recaptured or dead from the cold of the water or dragged under by the waters strong currents, and past the Golden Gate out to sea.

For what once served as the hardest prison to escape, inmates appeared to have a good life here. - well compared to other prisons of those times. We spent a day hear listening in on commentary of the prison and the people which its prison cells kept in the mid 1930's to 1960's. Feel to cold bars of the prison cells, spend time in the dining room where some of the echoes of daily routines can still be heard.

After listening to the tour we took a look around the penitentiary to see what would be like to work/sleep/eat and all round live here, serving time for a crime if we ever committed one in the years of operation - i don't think any of us would be able to sustain it! Its sad in a sense that the upkeep of such a piece of history is really low. The buildings you can see are slowly deteriorating, with some even coming down completely.

Strongly recommend doing the audio tour that can be taken on this extraordinary prison island.
