In our experience, it’s rare in a city as ancient as Rome to find such a modern hotel – rarer still to find a modern hotel done well. The Fortyseven Hotel is that place.

The two-year old hotel was formerly an office building and you can tell that they must have gutted the place and started over. The shell of the building is intact, but everything else is modern and new…and it works! The hotel has modern electronics, cooling and heating that actually work, and a great roof deck that boasts views of ancient Rome.

The rooms have comfortable beds, hardwood floors, flat screen televisions, marble bathrooms, and, best of all, electronic shutters that block out light and sound. Luckily, the view is ancient, so that you can’t forget that you’re in Rome (our room looked out on the Temples of the Forum Boarium that date from the 2nd century BC).

The great view from the roof top was by tasty food and drink – expensive, but worth it when you realize where you are.

The hotel is not perfect, however: there was noise from other rooms – scraping sounds of furniture being moved in the room above – but this was a relatively minor distraction. Despite generally helpful advice, we regretted following the recommendation of the concierge on the night she made a reservation for us at a traditional Italian restaurant that seemed more New Jersey Turnpike than Rome.

If you’re interested in ancient Rome, this hotel is in a great location – the Capitoline Hill (and its museums), the Colosseum, the Forum, and the Circus Maximus are all nearby – and it’s a short walk across the Tiber to the trendy neighborhood of Trastevere.

We think this is a good hotel for independent travelers who know what they want to see, don’t need recommendations or a lot of tourist assistance and don’t mind (or actually enjoy) walking and exploring the city. If that describes you, then this hotel will be a good match. We greatly enjoyed ourselves.
