Here's my quick run down on the shopping scene in Nagoya.

1. Uniqlo (nation wide chain all over Japan) - similar to GAP in fashion with basic colors and styles. Very cute and very reasonable in price. T-shirts $10-$15, jeans $40-$50.

2. Mujirushi (nationwide chain) - literally translated as no name brand. They sell everything from cookies, housewares to clothing. A bit pricier than Uniqlo.

3. Takashimaya JR (Opaque Clip) - my favorite store for trendy fashionable clothes, shoes and accessories. It is right at the Nagoya JR train station on the ground floor. I would say the fashion is for the 20-35 year old age bracket. I bought a really cute trench coat for $120 and a pink leather bag for $50.

4. Tokyu Hands - hobby store for model cars, planes, Gundam figurines. If you're a huge anime fan you can also check out the Mandarake store. There are 2 in Nagoya. One by the JR station and another in Namba.

5. Mitsukoshi, Daimaru, Marui O!O! - typical department store with high end brands from Japan and internationally. Eg. Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Tiffany. The prices are pretty much the same as in North America. However, with some brands I noticed they seem to get the new styles faster than North America (well Canada) and more exclusive styles which they don't carry in Canada.

6. Jusco/Max Value - local supermarket where you can buy candy, chocolates and even clothing for a far cheaper price than shopping in the touristy areas or in the larger department stores mentioned above. Granted the quality and styles are a bit outdated but Japan is at least a year ahead of us in Canada so even their outdated styles are ahead of us back home. I bought shoes for $25/each and my friends at home are always complimenting them. Also a great place to shop for housewares and basic undergarments like socks, underwear and bras.

7. Underground train station stores - I found that there are very unique and inexpensive stores that are scattered around the JR train stations and underground subway stations. JR Nagoya station is so big that you can spend an entire day looking through these stores.

8. Matsumoto Kiyoshi drugstore - I don't buy souvenirs for friends when I go to Japan. I normally clean out the Matsumoto Kiyoshi store. This is a jumbo drug store with smaller stores in the train stations. They carry most beauty products you can think of and chocolates and candies. Some great gift ideas which have been a hit among my friends (guys and girls) are biore nose strips (much cheaper in Japan), Cool Mint eyedrops, nail art/nail polish, face masks, oil blotting paper, cutely boxed chocolates and candies to name a few. It's much cheaper to buy it here than at the touristy stores. If you're looking for the Cool Mint eyedrops (OK with contacts), you'll be out of luck as we pretty much cleared out the entire supply in Nagoya!

I can go on and on about shopping but these are my basics.
