On a convoluted road on the shores of Lough Eske is the newly renovated elegant reception area and 40 new deluxe bedrooms and suites of Harvey’s Point Country Hotel. A miserable wet night but a warm greeting, plus a porter. Walking through the door of my Executive suite was the most amazing sight, too good not to miss so I followed Nils to his room and to see his reaction. The same as mine!Through an entrance to the 72sq m suite with its separate foyer with sink and mini bar opening onto a deluxe bathroom with oval bath, glass shower, bidet, lou and double sink. The roaming space of the main room, decorated with lavish comfort and graced with a more-then-king-sized bed, 32-inch plasma TV screen and balcony with view of the lake.Jody Gysling discovered a piece of Switzerland while on holiday in Ireland at Harvey’s Point, hidden in the hills of Donegal under the Blue Stack Mountains. Jody bought an old cottage from two brothers by the name of Harvey on what he describes as a swamp. He decided to stay and build starting out with four rooms, and then in 1989 Harvey’s Point was opened to the public with 20 bedrooms and two restaurants. At this time brother Marc joined Jody who offered local girl Deirdre a summer job and from here romance blossomed.Every year they make a new investment, adding the ballroom, extending the restaurant and adding a second function room. In 2005 there was a major investment when they added 40 deluxe bedrooms and suites, plus the elegant reception.That evening there was a scrumptious show, complete with buffet supper in the ballroom for Euro65. Instead, we enjoyed a sandwich in the bar next to the peat-burning fire.Next morning, we gorged on a scrumptious breakfast in the dining room with its bay window overlooking the lake where geese eagerly awaited their breakfast, or, as it turned out, a taste of me! It’s a rugged mountain range of peaks in excess of 60m and in parts quite remote. www.sliadhbeagh.orgAnother trail is approximately 70km from Sli Cholmcille to Kilcar via Carrick, Glen columbkille – Ardara, Glenveagh and Kilcar. Almost half of the route is along the coast, the other half through glens and uplands.The Roughey Walk is circular in the seaside resort Burndoram with spectacular views across the Atlantic Ocean, past the Fairy Bridges cliff arches which have been carved by the sea, close to the Wishing Chair.
