Even though its called a hotel, this wonderful place basically functions as a traditional Japanese Inn - a ryokan. Our room consisted of an ante-room for our outside shoes; a bathroom complete with bathroom slippers, and the main room - with tatami mats on the floor. There was also an enclosed balcony, separated from the main room by sliding paper screens. Our view included the bay and, if looking closely at night (when lit), the famous floating O-Torii Gate.

The 30000 Yen ($300 US) per night rate for 2 adults and 1 child included a full breakfast and a full dinner. And what a dinner - served in a separate private room - multiple courses of traditional Japanese cuisine - anago-meshi (conger eel), oysters (well, yuk), sushi, sashimi, rice, salmon, miso soup, multiple side dishes, prawns, ... Given the prices we saw elsewhere for food, I would not be at all suprised if it would have cost us upwards of $100 per person for a similar meal at a local restaurant.

The breakfast, served in the banquet hall, was equally fine - with attentive service and excellent food.

The hotel/inn is located about a 7-8 minute walk from the ferry terminal and about a 10 minute walk from the Itsukushima Shrine (and Torii gate). Most folks apparently stay for only one night to explore Miyajima Island, so the front desk folks were pleasantly suprised when we said we were staying for two - and we had even a better dinner the 2nd night!

When we finally checkout out, all of the available staff on the main floor came out and bowed to us and then waved good-bye - they also insisted that we take their van to the ferry - and again made us feel like very special guests.

For an affordable ryokan experience, we highly recommended the Miyajima Hotel Makoto.
