Left early this morning and headed the short drive to Quito through the Andes. It was beautiful with high mountain passes and deep ravines. After checsking in a lunchtime headed out to get our bearings and to try to locate the hostel that Jen and I would be moving to the following day. Came around a great Indian restaurant on Wilson y Reina Victoria, that we just had to stop at for lunch. It was run by two Indian and after 6 months on the road, the thought of the curry was welcome. The food was amazing, freshly cooked and he even gave us 20% off with a promise that it would be better next time. Not sure that is possible. Later than night we headed out on the last group meal at Mongos where it was as much as you could eat and drink for $10. After this we headed out to a club and partied till 3.30am.
Following morning was a late one and the official end of the tour. It will seem weird not getting on the truck on a regular basis and no having so many people around. The trip has certainly been memorable with lots of sights and memories - I think it will all come back to me when I get my photos developed of what I´ve really seen and done.
So would I recommend it? Of course - South America is a fascinating country and very diverse and much easier to travel around that I first may have thought. The truck or overlanding - well it´s a long time (although trips can be shorter) and it´s not for everyone but is one way to meet people and see some of the sights that you may not see if you were travelling on your own. It is easier as everything is done for you, language is less of an issue but the days can be long and persoanalities on the truck you may not get on with are harder to escape. It provides a great insight to a country/area/continent but can be unflexible, especially if you want to stay in an area longer. From my own experience though, it provided what I wanted and was exactly what I expected and I have great memories and experiences.
