A relaxing day.  The weather has turned for the worse, so we wrap up warm, Matthew wearing trousers for the whole day for I believe the first time this holiday!  Lloyd is tucked under his dad’s coat in the baby carrier, Matthew in the pram.  We then set off in the morning for a day out in drizzly Queenstown.

We hit the gondola up to the skyline viewing area.  I’m pleased with myself, as not a great fan of such things, but it isn’t so bad.  I then go on the “luge” at the top of the skyline, which is a bit like a go-cart, with views over Queenstown.  I decide to take Matthew for the 2nd run.  He absolutely loved it, and cried his eyes out when we left.  He kept saying “again, again”.  I would have took him more, but to be honest I was worried that if he struggled too much on the chairlift I could potentially drop him.  Not that I would, but didn’t want to risk it.

We book Steve on a skydive (15000ft) for the following morning, just for fun of course!

We then wander about town for an eternity trying to find somewhere to eat.  We end up in an Irish bar, but don’t stop for food in the end as Matthew is really crabby by this point.  It annoys me when a girl “tuts” at us for Matthew throwing a tantrum, even  though I quickly remove him from the pub until he calms down.  It was like she didn’t think we should be there with 2 kids.  But for us its hard as its hard to cook dinner (especially when tired), and hard to go into a posh restaurant with 2 kids in tow (though we have done it).  We also want something decent to eat, and don’t want to be forced to eating in MacDonalds or Pizza Hut like many families opt for.  And I wanted a beer for god’s sake!!!  So I was a bit annoyed at this girl (not that I commented to her), I am not a 2nd class citizen, I just happen to have 2 very young children, one of whom likes to throw tantrums when he doesn’t get his own way!!!

We are noticing the difference with Matthew, he is a lot more confident than when we set off, and is willing to try out new things more readily.  He trusts us to show him new stuff I think.  Before we came away we had problems with him not liking electrical noises (such as an electric powered car, or shredder), and not letting us put a helmet on his head, stuff like that.  But on the luge he didn’t worry at all about having the helmet on, and never questioned jumping on the gondola or the chairlift.  Yes he has definitely changed, and I believe for the better.

Lloyd is also different now.  He is much closer to Steve, I think because Steve has spent more time with him.  He loves his Dad, it is obvious to see, and looks for him in the motorhome whenever he is awake.  Lloyd also pays a lot of interest to Matthew, smiling away at him.  Lloyd can sort of chuckle, he makes this noise when smiling sometimes, especially if Steve is talking to him.  It’s a pleasure to watch the pair of them.

I think there is a hint of resentment from Matthew at Lloyd, but not too much.  Occasionally he will want me to hold him when Lloyd is crying, knowing that I need to pick Lloyd up.  But I just pick Matthew up and let Steve tend to Lloyd, I think its probably the right thing to do.  And Matthew studies Lloyd sometimes, I think working out that he is here to stay and that he is a real person.  I think the first time Lloyd smiled at Matthew it made Matthew a bit scared!
