I’ve just spent a couple of days in the Amazon jungle which was quite interesting as I learnt a few things about myself... I don’t like monkeys and I don’t like reptiles, spiders and insects of any variety! Send me back to the Galapagos!!!
We flew from Lima to Puerto Maldonado which is this bizarre river town and then got a canoe down the river to the lodge. The lodge was lovely, lots of huts and tropical flowers. After settling into my hut (complete with hammock) we headed out on the canoe again to visit Monkey Island.... aptly named of course as there were lots of spider monkeys and other varieties.. I really felt uncomfortable around them as they were toying with us and running/swinging around us and they just looked too aware of what was going on!
That night we had dinner in the lodge and it felt a bit like school camp with the communal tables, except there was also a bar....
After dinner we hopped on the canoe again and drifted down river in the full moon light looking at the stars, listening to the jungle sounds and looking for camen (crocs)... very nice.....
Next day we were up very early for an 8hr hike in the jungle, sloshing through mud up to our knees, paddling down rivers, looking for tarantulas, etc.... it was hard work, but good fun.. though from listening to our guide it really did seem like every plant would either kill you or cure you..!
