Our tour manager had warned us that Rome was not a safe place and on our last night in Rome we found out just how unsafe it can be. A group of people had gone out to celebrate a birthday and were on their way home around 11pm when the tour manager and bus driver noticed the lights in the coach were on. JB (the manager) is an ex-cop and thought he could handle it. Turns out the coach was being robbed. JB and Ian (the bus driver) got on the coach and grabbed hold of two of the two guys. At this point a third guy entered and stabbed Ian in the back twice with a metal object. Poor guy was pretty lucky though. They didn't hit any major organs. He got stitched up and was determined to drive onwards in the morning. What a tropper. He seems fine now and is being looked after by 5 nurses who happen to be in this tour group.
The next morning we travelled to Pompeii where we explored the old city. After a volcanic erruption more than 1500 years ago the city was covered and forgotten about. They have been slowing uncovering the city and have recovered about 4/5th. The guide was really quirky and had a whole lot of attitude. We didn't have long to explore but it was neat. I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the neighbourhood.
We pressed on and made it to the ferry around 6pm, another time zone switch then made it 7pm. I was very nervous about getting sea sick as I had on the ferry from England to France so I took some gravel, had no dinner, drank some wine and went to bed. Worked like a charm! I slept away the entire trip. What an easy way to travel. I woke up in the morning just in time to watch us dock in Corfu.
There was a very short drive to our hotel - which is very nice! A huge pool and great views of the waterfront. That's all for now... I'll write more of Greece shortly. Time to upload photos!
Cheers,
Laura
