What a blast diving is...I joined 15 other people on a speed boat from OffSpray charters to Phi Phi Islands for 2 days. THe trip was about one hour from Phuket town and the weather was fantastic...95 and sunny both days.
The skipper gave us the tour of all the Phi Phi islands and we stopped to feed monkeys bananas...right out of our hands...how natural. We saw Maya Beach which if course is where the movie the "Beach" was filmed..you know the one with Leonardo decrapio. We saw fruit bats hanging in trees way up on the 500ft plus limestone cliffs/islands, stopped for a look at the viking cave where a few Thais lived, climbing up makeshift ladders to heights over 65 feet to collect birds nest...and sell them for $2500 a kilo to the chinese who make a soup out of it..called, Bird's Nest Soup.
The first day, bot hdives, the visability was only about 25 feet and I saw a few hundred fish but nothing spectacular other than the fact I was effortlessly swimming at 60ft under the surface breathing...Day two was much more clear, I saw a few hundred pound Grouper fish, a large sea turtle, a minute Seahorsie, octopus and millions of fish.
Day two I was much more calm and functioned better underwater...of course clearing my ears was very painful and it took almost a week to finally hear normal again.
I am finally a certified open water diver...among other things.
The lunch the crew set up was amazing. Perhaps I was just starved, but smoked gouda on the beach was simply amazing.
