Well I cant deny that i was slightly dissappointed with what i'd seen of Indian beaches so far, previous travels having spoilt me!
But then we arrived in Palolem, a long curved stretch of beach with the headland curving round at either end forming palm covered islands and creating a small bay. The tides stil strong here (we couldnt swim at all further north) but the bay makes the waves a bit less scary and i've managed some of the old drowning dog style swiming a couple of times!
All the bars and restaurants are on the beach so you can bury your feet in the sand whilst enjoying a fruit shake or chicken sizzler - basically a chicken curry on a bed of rice topped with chips! served in cabbage leaves and set on fire! not really sure why this was thought a good idea as there is a very strong breze here and most the waiters end up singed by the time it gets to the table!
any way by far the best thing about palolem is not the beautiful picturesc beach or the chilled out atmosphere, it is in fact that we are staying in a beach hut, make of bamboo, right on the beach front with a bacolny looking out to the sea and ........... A HAMMOCK!!!! oh yeah baby! I have spent the best part of the last three days lazing in my hammock (ben gets the odd go)
and on the first morning when i woke up and went into the bathrom there on the wall was a big fat hairy spider - the shape of a huntsman but smaller (about the size of my palm) and i very calmy told ben to "co meinherequickthere 'saspiderineedhelp" and he bravely chased it away with his trusty stick (a new addition which ben is very proud of) and i continued to breathe and just carried on with what i was doing, no screaming, no imediate packing and leaving
feeling very proud of myself as feel that moment spent cowering behind ben is leaps and bounds ahead of running down the road screaming and leaving kate to deal with it!
so it may be 1-0 to the spiders but i claim the moral victory
apart from that little else to report, we're currently planning our next move, rains have started over the southern islands so it will probably be two weeks before they get realy bad here. we'll probably leave in about a week and we're thinking we'll go up to the himalyas to start with as it's a bit coler up there!
xx
