My three friends and I walked up and down Clinton Street a couple of times before finding this restaurant. I would appreciate them marking the restaurant better from the outside, but perhaps that is supposed to add to the tucked-away ambiance or something. Either way, once inside you are in for a nice dining experience. We had excellent service and excellent food. We each opted to get one appetizer (around $17 for each). I got the fried quail with banana tartar. The quail literally melted in my mouth. I usually only rave about vegetarian foods or desserts, but this quail was beyond fantastic. My friends chose appetizers as varied as grilled octopus, smoked eel, and popcorn soup (everybody's favorite, how did they get it to taste like popcorn?).
Next we decided on the 5-course dessert tasting menu (which somehow became 6 courses). Each course was small, but by the time we hit the final course we were quite full! We started with wintergreen parfaits. Next came toasted coconut cakes with brown butter sorbet. Third was shortbread with spruce yogurt, pistachio, and yuzu curd (like I even know what that last ingredient is!); fourth an amazing rooibos creamsicle with orange blossom; fifth a soft white chocolate with potato and white beer ice cream; and finally, the best of all, cherry-covered chocolate mousse. With each new course, the servers would explain what these exotic desserts were. I hadn't even heard of half the ingredients and wouldn't expect half the items to be in desserts (who would have thought of potato in a white-chocolate dessert?), but I can truly say each course was delicious and one-of-a-kind. It was like eating miniature works of art. Definitely worth getting the 5-course dessert menu ($35) to experience as many of these crazy desserts as possible!
