Nazca, Peru 6-19-2007
Whistle it with me fans. I miss that goofy show, but today I was able to investigate one of the world´s great mysteries in true X-Files fashion: The Nazca Lines. 2000 years ago the local Nazcans started scraping and clearing outlines in the desert, huge outlines, monstrous. Birds, Spiders, killer whales, and others were created over many years. Then they started scraping lines and figures like trapezoids. Strangely the lines and trapezoids were aligned with the solstice sunrise and celestial bodies. More strangely, NONE of these things can be seen from the ground. Dammit Scully, I braved a bumpy 40 minute Cessna flight to witness these ancient mysteries! So, even the highest nearby hill (which I climbed of course, Mulder would demand no less) doesn´t really give enough perspective for the few things you can see. Strangest of all, the trapezoids look amazingly like landing strips for airborne vehicles. Start the whistling.
Now the big question, how did they do it? And even bigger, as far as Mulder is concerned, for whom were they built? Well, there was a whole book dedicated to the ancient alien visitation theory called ´Chariots of the Gods´by I forget who but a lot of his facts start to lose credibility, like the landing strip carved onto the side of hill. Not a very comfy landing if you ask me. Other folks actually believe the ancient Nazcans could fly, with hot air balloons. Ummm, not buying it myself. What I do think, is that the Nazcans worshiped the sky (and whoever they saw come out of it , Fox winks at me) and could see figures in the constellations and tried to reply in kind. How the heck they did it is still amazing to me, and the fact that the desert is SO dry here that cleared strips and rock borders could last two thousand years. Granted Maria Reiche painstakingly restored many of them in the 70´s, but still.
A last argument from Mulder though. On the side of one hill is carved the figure of a humanoid. However, its head is abnormally oval shaped with only two large eyes showing, no nose and mouth, with one arm waving (at whom we wonder). It´s called ´The Astronaut´. Okay, maybe it´s hard to draw a huge human head on the side of the hill buuuuut the story doesn´t end there. Seems the ancient Nazcans also practiced an odd ritual. They would use rope and wood to purposely squeeze an infant´s soft skull to create a deformity. And what would that deformity look like after the baby grew up? A damn GREY Alien of course!! God, how much more evidence do you need Scully?
Mulder´s convinced. Me, I´m confused and enjoy the mystery. If we knew the answer to everything in the world, what fun would it be.
