Nara is an ancient city with a fascinating treasure of monuments and cultural heritage.

History of Nara begins in the Asuka period (552-646). Nara was the capital of Japan between 710 and 784 (it was called "Citadel of Peace"). This period is reconized for the impact on the Japanese civilization. Between 743-752,  the Great Buddha Todaiji Temple was build. This is the most impressive image of Buddha I have ever seen! Is made in bronze, is 16 meters in height and weights about 500 tons. From the original statue, only the petals of the lothus flower are present. The other parts were repeteadly repaired or redone.

The seven Great Temples of Nara are of an breathtaking grandeur. In the centrum of Nara, the Kofuku-ji Temple  was tutelary temple of the Fujiwara family. A compound of buildings belong to Kofuku-ji Temple and the oldes one is the Hokuen-do octogonal hall and the three storied pagoda. The five storied pagoda was build later and also rebuild a few times, because it was damaged by fire.

Other attractions of Nara, are the deer´s, which walk freely in the park. You can feed them and make wonderful pictures!

The most impressive Japanese Gardens can be found in Nara. I enjoyed a lot to walk in the Isuien Garden.
