Backpackers that used to be a hotel, in one of Napiers beautiful Art Deco buildings right in the centre. Good rates, a really good kitchen- with gas hobs! Three lounge areas in all, so loads of space to chill out. No lockers in rooms my only real quibble.

Eastland is great for surfing and if you’re in Eastland, you’ve got to check out the wineries. Gisborne is called the ‘Chardonnay Capital of NZ’.
