Well its term paper season, and the obvious thing to do is to
find as many ways possible to procrastinate and avoid working entirely,
yet still delude yourself into believing that something of substance
was accomplished. Alas, i have a paper due in 2 frikin days and i've
just decided on a topic. so naturally it is time for a break! Since
Kenya is the one thing that is constantly on my mind, i found this site
as a way to communicate to people while i'm gone. the cool thing is i
will be able to post photos! I have no realistic conception of how
often i will actually be able to update this but hey, its worth a shot
and has a fancy map feature! i have yet to get my passport updated or
my visas to uganda and kenya which might turn out to be a mistake but
hey! it will get done...eventually. Hopefully this procrastination wont
end up biting me in the ass as it usually does. I found out today that
i have 2 choices for the malaria pills i can take while i'm over there
one set is a daily thing but it costs 5$ a pill! the advantage is that
it has no side effects. My other option is an equally expensive pill but
i only have to take it once a week. So obviously thats the one to go
with...it will end up costing me 1/7 of the other one. The catch is the
side effects. i've been told that it usually gives the person some
Really FUCKED Up dreams ranging from the vividly erotic (which honestly
i wouldn't mind ;) to the freakishly psychotic. I guess i'll have to
take my chances with pill 2! i almost feel like making a nerdy matrix
dream pill reference but i think ill refrain for all our sakes. Ok
seeing all these people ACTUALLY working here at McLenan is making me
feel guilty and this pile of books to peruse for useful term paper
quotes really isn't getting any smaller. My next update will probably
come during exams!GOD i hope i make it to January with still a
respectable GPA and some fragment of my sanity intact.
Jan in Africa says:
Alexandre, I really discourage you from taking Lariam, the pill you take once a week. First off, the side effects are real and dangerous, especially for people with stress disorders, but not uniauely. The most calm people ever get super stressed and annoyed at everything, and the psychologically weaker ones get really fucked up. Most volunteers in Burkina changed their medication to Malarone, the one that costs 5 dollars a pop. If you are not convinced yet, listen to this: ALL the volunteers that were taking Lariam contracted malaria!!! I really advise you to change if time permits. The RAMQ reimburses 72 ercent of expenses on Malarone, so the real cost is just over a dollar a day. Please spread this to all that you know.
