Decided to get out of Antigua for the weekend and head to the beach – one hell of a way to spend the first day of December!

The journey there was a lot of fun. A manic minibus drive and then a boat ride through a mangrove swamp that reminded me more of the Amazon than the mountain highlands of Guatemala.

Sounds silly but in all my travels I’ve never been seen the Pacific Ocean. It was just amazing.  So much more alluring than the Atlantic and fantastically warm, though it had an absolutely killer undercurrent.

Monterrico is also the site of a small Turtle conservation project, and on Friday I watched as they released about 100 newly hatched turtles into the surf. Ok so “released” is perhaps making it sound grander than it really was, in reality they kicked over two big builders buckets and the Turtles just scampered off. Was great to see, and couldn’t help but think of Finding Nemo.

Apart from turtle watching, a bit of swimming and reading I really didn’t do much all weekend. Just what I needed as my brain was absolutely smarting from all the Spanish I was trying to cram into it.

But on the way back I have to admit to missing something incredibly cool… my first ever earthquake. It was a pretty big one two, about 5.6 on the Richter scale, and the epicentre was right in the Pacific Ocean only 30km from where I was. Unfortunately I was in a car getting a ride home at the time and didn’t even notice it, I must have just presumed it was another pothole!
