Today I left my motel in the middle of nowhere and drove through nowhere until I reached Moab which is where I am now. I am here for 3 nights visiting the nearby national parks before heading across to Colorado on Tuesday.

The scenery today was absolutely spectacular and I think Utah definitely wins hands down for the state with the best scenery I have visited. Around every bend was another dramatic view which was amazing. The photos don’t do the views justice really as it is hard to capture the fact that everything looked so amazing whichever way you turned for the whole of my 5 hour drive today.

This morning I drove through Capitol Reef NP which was just outside the town where I was staying. There are so many national parks down here that you just can’t avoid driving through them even if you tried! The red rock formations were really spectacular in the morning sun and I stopped for a while to take in the views and have a little ponder. I then pulled over at the side of the road at a random point (they have pullouts everywhere on the roads here and you don’t know what you’re going to find until you stop) and saw some 1,000 year old Indian carvings into the stone. This was quite cool as there was no sign or anything pointing to them. I wondered what else I have missed on my travels so far, but if I stopped at every single one of these things I probably would only be half-way up California by now!

I then drove on through canyon after canyon, each one as spectacular as the last. In the end I just gave up taking photos as otherwise I would have hundreds of photos of canyons, which might be a little dull, however spectacular they are. I also spotted a lot of hardcore Mormons today – in what I think is full Mormon dress – men with trousers, shirts and braces, and women with dresses and little bonnety things. Quite strange really.

Distance travelled today – 245 miles.

Bearwatch – 0. I think they would cook in their coats today, it’s hot!

Been tracing your journey on our map & eventually found Torrey. Clue that it was just outside Capitol Reef NP, otherwise wouldn't have found it at all. Must be impossibly hard to put just 4 photos onto blog, but all looks v.spectacular. Could do with a bit of heat here. Jim sends best wishes, Mxx

There are men wearing trousers, shirts and braces here in Barkway - you didn't have to go to Utah to find them Claire. Think Arthur King. As for women with bonnets - I seem to recall your own dear Mother...................(think Pantomime)
