We caught our ferry at about 10 PM from Santorini to the island of Milos. It was an unevenful ferry ride, docking at the town of Adamas at about 2 AM. We had been undecided on the matter of accomadation. We hate arriving late and paying a full night. On the other hand, we were a little leery of camping as we both still have a lot of insect bites. We decided to see what sort of domatia was being offered at the ferry quay. Of course, for the first time there were no people with signs advertising rooms to rent. So we found a beench overlooking the sea and at 3 AM sat and waited for morning to come. Luckily, we'd gotten a little sleep on the ferry because neither of us got much sleep that night.
At about 8 AM, we headed for the tourist office for accomadion information. On the way there, we found the most amazing bakery. We pretty much ate something from there for every meal. Cookies, pastries, donuts, bread (Aidan's favourite: olive bread), pies and pizza. All very yummy and the prices were even pretty good.
We found out from the tourist office that accomadation was on the expensive side. (The Cyclades have been the most expensive yet for accomadation.) We ended up taking a bus to the camping site which was located about 7 km outside of Adamas. This meant taking a bus in but with the price couldn't be beat. The camping site was a pleasant surprise. It was cleaner, there were still insects (but not as many), a bigger pool with a gorgeous view, and a nice beach just a couple minutes away.
Our first day, we checked out the nearby beach and walked around Adamas. Our second day we had been hoping to take an excursion boat tour around the island with breaks for pictures and swimming at some choice beaches. Unfortunately, it was very windy the whole time we were there so this wasn't possible. So instead we took a bus to the capital of Plaka, northwest of Adamas. There we climbed up to the top of the acropolis where there were the remains of a fortress and a little church and great views. After that, we found an old stone path that winded down to the beach of Plathiena where we went swimming. The water was a lovely bluish-green and there were rock cliffs at the sides of the beach. We then caught a bus back to Plaka, probably had lunch at the wonderful bakery, then took another bus northeast to Papafragas which was a little bit of a disappointment. In the pictures we'd seen, the water was bluish-green and there were people swimming. In actuality, the water was murky brown and there were signs warning people of the dangerous cliffs. On our last day, we went to Sarakiniko. Here there were neat white rock formations with places where the sea had worn its way in. It seemed to be a popular spot with lots of people swimming.
We had a really nice time in Milos as it was smaller and less touristy. The coastlines were stunning and we only wish we'd made it on a boat around the island. (The bakery was great too.)
