We had an early start today, getting out of the camp before 8am and heading off to Milford Sound. It is a 75 mile trip from Te Anau to get to Milford Sound, accessible only from one road, so 75 miles back again aswell. The only other way in is by boat or plane (or walking if you are a bit crazy).
The drive to Milford Sound was absolutely gobsmackingly beautiful. 75 miles of postcard scenery, and it just got better and better the further we went. It’s a 2.5 hour drive down winding roads, but the time passed in a flash, both there and back.
I would say its one of the most scenic roads I have encountered, if not the most scenic. It was helped by the snow covering from the previous day, and the low cloud. It reminded me and Steve very much of the Lord of the Rings films, which were of course filmed in New Zealand.
We went on a cruise down the Sound, which was also great, though it did pour with rain (which is extremely common here, they have 1 inch per day on average!). The steep mountains and waterfalls and sheer size of the place was awe-inspiring. The cruise ship we were on was practically new, you could tell this place takes some serious money from the tourists.
The kids were brilliant, Lloyd slept on the way there and on the way back, even allowing us to make photo stops. Matthew was his usual jovial self, enjoying the ride on the way there, then sleeping on the way back. They were great at Milford Sound also, not causing too much havoc!
Me and Steve thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, especially the drive there and back. It was nice to be out in the wilderness, even if we were in a motorhome, and nice to get away from the hustle of Queenstown. Our ship was practically empty at the Sound, so although there were plenty of tourists around it wasn’t in your face.
Now we are back in Te Anau. We did consider moving on today, but the trip to Milford Sound was quite tiring, especially for Steve who did all the driving. He has done all the driving the whole trip, which helps me out as I’m up in the night with Lloyd, and also I am not a great fan of driving motorhomes (they bore me to death!). Give me a sports car anyday!
The kids are both asleep again, its 9pm, cant be bad. Will make a cup of tea soon, 2 nights on the trot, I do believe maybe I have some form of routine in place!!! Hallelujah
