In August we spent our vacation in México City to visit Moises' family. We were able to go with everyone including April and Aaron. Moises' brother Lalo from England and his family were there also. In all there were 19 of us when we all got together. Only Moises' brother Rodo and his wife were unable to be there. The 10 grandchildren ranging in age from 10 to 29 were together for the first time in 10 years, with some not even remembering the last time. Moises has the oldest (April) and the youngest (Ethan) grandchildren. We stayed at a hotel down the street so each day we walked over to the house and started our days with joyful greetings and a line of hugs. We then enjoyed a hearty breakfast of huevos, tamales, moyetes, horchata, cajeta on toast, tropical fruit and of course cereal. That short walk was along a 5-lane street in one direction, and we got a lot of looks...we really stood out with the mohawks, blonds, and when April and Amber were with us, there were several honks and whistles. We realized right away the girls would not be walking anywhere by themselves.
While we were there, there was a 5.9 earthquake and we were on the 4th floor of our hotel. It was a pretty good long rocking motion, but there was no damage or panic. Also while we were there, there was the foiled terrorist plot which resulted in increased airline security. We thought that would cause a huge delay at the airport, but everything went smooth and on time. There was also some political stife with protests against the presidential election (close race and recounts) but it was all peaceful when we walked through the protest camps.
Driving in Mexico City is an adventure. Usually we had two cars and a van to use when we all were together. Thank you to Alma and Joel for the use of their cars and for driving and to Lalo for driving also. Driving is quite stressful and there is a lot of traffic, horn honking, and some interesting crazy maneuvers. Everywhere we went there was a lot of people and activity. We took the subway once too during rush hour-- it was crowded!! At times we didn't have all the cars or drivers available, so we would just pile into the van and one time there was 13 of us!! Poor Ethan had to lay down in the very far back of the van.
We visited several places throughout México City including Las Prismas park, downtown, Zócalo, the Cathedral, Chapultapec, Xochimilco, Ballet Folklórico, and restaurants and fiestas. I'll describe more in detail in separate entries.
