As of May, 2006 I am no longer a college student, but instead an as-of-yet unemployed college graduate. As a child, my interest in the outdoors and history led me on many excursions around the Atlantic coast and to any number of historical sites (primarily from colonial times through the Revolutionary War). My real obsession with travel began the summer after seventh grade when I went to Zimbabwe with two friends and my social studies teacher for three weeks. Since then I have made my way to Yosemite in California, Costa Rica four times, Ecuador twice, and Honduras. I look forward to discovering more of South America on my current adventure. Some of my favorite things to do are read, write, build everything from houses to furniture, explore the outdoors, and experiment in the kitchen (eating goes hand in hand with the latter).

A not-so-chilly winter week in Chile Aug 16 '06 "I spent a sweltering hot afternoon walking up, down, and around the myriad small paths of Cerro Santa Lucia, which with its many beautiful gardens, small church, look-out tower, and wonderful rock outcroppings remains the most beautiful outdoor space I've seen thus far in Santiago." | Santiago, Chile
Cerro Santa Lucia "THis is a great little hill in the heart of downtown Santiago covered in beautifully landscaped gardens and so many little paths and stairways, one could easily get lost for an entire afternoon" | Santiago, Chile
Museo de Arte Precolombino de Chile "A truly impressive museum... we planned on spending two hours and only saw half of it! The exhibits are well put together with really informative write-ups in both Spanish and English. I'd highly recommend it for anyone interested in the many Pre-Colombian civilizations of the Americas." | Santiago, Chile
Add ¨Driest¨ to my growing list of South American explative experiences Aug 26 '06 "A simple turn of the head affords views of seemingly endless salt flats, 19,000 ft volcanos, labyrinthine canyons, and, if you happen to be in the right place, pre-Inkan ruins." | San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Hot Springs-Downhill Mountain Biking tour from hostel San Pedro "If you are a fan of anything high speed, this one´s for you. A driver takes you and your bike up to a thermal river spa high above San Pedro and, after soaking for an hour or two, you hop on your bike and scream back down the road for fifteen or twenty kilometers of almost constant downhill...of course, you will want to stop along the way to take pictures and soak up the absolutely sureal scenery." | San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Hostel San Pedro...Hosteling International "Comfy beds, short showers, and some very interesting people..." | San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Rent a mountain bike and head out to explore for the day "There are a vast number of things to do and places to see just outside San Pedro and a bike is a terrific way to see a few of them in one day...not to mention that the bikes at almost all of the agencies are well above average,so you don´t have to worry about them falling apart under you." | San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Todo Natural "After days of empanadas and other bargain basement fare, the whole grain breads and artfully presented main dishes at this health conscious place were a real treat." | San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Tour of the Night Sky "This tour, offered by a French Astronomer and his wife, is an absolute must for anyone even the least bit interested in the night sky. A short bus ride takes you out into the desert away from light polution to the Astronomer´s house where five different telescopes are permanently installed for your viewing pleasure. The mixture of the guides´expertise, the equipment, and the lack of atmospheric turbulence makde this one of the most stunning and certainly the most educational experience I´ve had in Chile." | San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

One cool museum and a lot of really annoying cab drivers Aug 29 '06 "I´ve never been to Tijuana, but it only took me five minutes in Arica to feel convinced that I was there." | Arica, Chile
Museo Arquologico in the Azapa Valley "This museum houses some of the oldest mummies in the world along with artifacts from various pre-colombian civilizations. Although we expected there to be more of a focus on the mummies, it was still a worthwile side trip before crossing the border to Peru. the mummies we did see were impressive to say the least and will give us a reference point when we visit the ice mummies in Arequipa, Peru" | Arica, Chile
Here's to easily navigable bus stations and the return of CHEAP food! Aug 29 '06 "there was a legion of the same Taxi driving bastards we had left behind in Arica..., but we sped through them, nullifying their requests with the verbal persistence of telemarketers and weaving our way through them with the physical agility of NFL runningbacks..." | Tacna, Tacna
one dollar three course set menu in the bus station cafe "After weeks of wallet breaking prices in Chile, a bowl of tasty soup followed by a mountainous plate of chicken, rice, and beans with a Coke for one dollar was as good a welcome as could have been expected from Peru" | Tacna, Tacna
What a Place to Begin a Journey Through Peru Aug 30 '06 | Arequipa, Peru
Check out Juanita the frozen ice mummy "She's world famous and she's probably got the most technologically advanced personal freezer the world has ever known...in all seriousness, this museum was really stunning. It was a bit expensive ($5US) but the guide was really well spoken and the exhibits were stunning." | Arequipa, Peru
Tuna, Tuna, Tuna, and crackers "I ate more tuna more times than I care to think about while in Arequipa...but it was cheap and cheap is good!" | Arequipa, Peru
The Point Hostel "Everything Tambo Viejo wasn't! Lots of young people, ping-pong, foosball, hammocks, big kitchen, cool bar and an up-for-just-about-anything party vibe...great time" | Arequipa, Peru
Hostel Tambo Viejo "This place, although highly recomended by Lonely Planet as a cool traveler's hangout was LAME...lots of middle aged people and a bar that closes at 8:00 PM? What kind of cool hangout is that...we arrived at 2:30 AM and checked out the same morning!" | Arequipa, Peru
The world's biggest birds in the world's second deepest canyon Sep 01 '06 "she gave us another sulky damn-you-for-not-buying-something look and left us to ask the owner of the restaurant if we could sit at a table to eat our food." | Chivay, Arequipa
Canon del Colca tour from Arequipa "It's a good thing this tour was cheap because it wasn't really what we expected. It turned out to be a really pre-packaged tour void of any time for personal discovery/adventure. That said, we did see a bunch of Andean Condors, which, while majestic in their own right, made for a truly unimaginable sight when combined with the 3200 meter deep canyon. Had we had more time and more physical conditioning I'm sure we would have opted for the three day tour, which involves hiking to the bottom of the canyon, sleeping under the stars, and hiking back out, but time, altitude, and money ruled that out as a possibility. The bottom line is that if you go to Arequipa you absolutely have to see the Canyon and the Condors even if it means going on one of those tours you pledged you'd never be sen on." | Chivay, Arequipa
