After nearly seven months of being away from home and living in hostels, I was very happy to spend a week in a luxury resort/condo with my parents. Kendra and I got royally spoiled, pampered, and overloaded with food and gifts from my parents. We were both pretty overwhelmed at first by the extreme luxury of the resort in comparison to some of the hostels we´d stayed in as well as the contrast to the true living standards of the Mexicans and Central Americans. The place was enormous and the pool absolutely gigantic. The bellboys informed us that if we needed anything, including a boyfriend, they would happily be at our service. We didn´t even have to do any walking if we didn´t want to as the shuttle could and would take us anywhere in the resort.
I´m happy to say my parents are not the type of people who can sit back on a lounge chair for a week straight, so we were able to explore the Mayan Riviera in their rental car. We visited Chichin Itza, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Isla Mujeres. We each took turns being sick with stomach pain, headaches, diarrhea, or nausea at one time or another during their week stay. Kendra and I later agreed that we were happy to have had that experience in a condo with HBO and a mom around rather than in a hostel somewhere with uncomfortable beds and noisy fellow-backpackers.Mom, Pap and I also did some of the best snorkeling I´ve done in Akulum where we also had the experience of feeding some wild Iguanas. The larger iguana even licked my finger, and had I not moved my finger away may have taken a bite out of my hand as well.
