I have been invited and accepted a position with the Peace Corps in Madagascar as Environment Education Volunteer commencing February 2007 for 27 months.
The first step is an orientation or staging for three days in a USA city starting 15 February 2007. Staging occurs in one of eight cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington DC. I will not know until January to which city I will be sent.
The next step is pre-service training in Madagascar 19 February-25 April 2007. Then I will be assigned somewhere in Madagascar for service April 2007-May 2009. And, of course, all dates are subject to change!
Madagascar, as the fourth largest island in the world (after Greenland, Guinea and Borneo), is often considered the “eighth continent”. It is located in the Indian Ocean east of Mozambique in Southern Africa. The country has been settled by people from both Asia and Africa yet the culture is a blend of both, that is uniquely Malagasy. With thousands of species of plants and animals that exist only on this island, Madagascar is considered a global environmental “hot spot” and I feel very fortunate to have this wonderful opportunity.
