Lucerne is sourrended by some very high mountains, one of them is Pilatus Mountain. It is 2,132 meters (7,000ft) there are lots of legends about this mountains from people in Lucerne, but I don't know any of them, sorry

A nice experience having a ride in a cogwheel train up to the summit. Take the train or boat to Alpnachstad and go up the funicular railway from there - going up gradients as steep as 48%, this is the worlds most precipitous funicular railway. A cable car can then be taken to return to Lucerne as a round trip. If the weather is clear (v. rare) then a marvellous alpine panorama can be seen . At the top you enjoy the unforgetable view over the surrounding mountains and lakes.

You can make an all-day excursion of traveling to Mt. Pilatus. A discount ticket for the whole trip is available at various hotels. You take a bus to the gondola which heads up the mountain. You can then hike around the top of Mt Pilatus or just relax and eat lunch . The top of the mountain has a large patio with restaurants and several paths for walking around the various mountain faces. The exercise freaks can even hike up to the top.

At the top of Pilatus, you get a chance to play a Alphorn. http://en.wikipedia.org /wiki/Alphorn

From the tourist office you can take a half-day guided excursion to the top of the Pilatus overlooking the city. From Lucerne you take the lake steemers to the village of Alpnachstad then board the steepest cogwheel railway in the world for a 45 minutes journey to Pilatus-Kulm at 2070m with magnificent views of the Alps and Lucerne. From there you take the cable car down to Kriens (482m) and the local bus back to Lucerne. Tours runs daily year-round for arround Fr.85.

There are four ways to come down from Mt. Pilatus. Hike, Gondola, steepest railway, or you can really have an adventure, paragliding. Who will reach Alpnachstad first?
