The early morning at Laurebina was quite spectacular bright and sunny up above the clouds but within an hour the clouds had thickened and we had a day of walking through the clouds. The first hour and half was steep uphill to a small shrine, our mars bar stop! Then the path levelled out and narrowed hugging the side of the mountain, visibility was 20 metres so there wasn't much to see until we'd nearly reached Gossainkund where suddenly the clouds parted to reveal one of the lakes - Bhairabh Kund very dark and menacing reflecting the snow covered peak behing and with cloud like the dragons breath rolling up over the bottom edge of the lake. There's a myth relating to a serpent that lives in the lake and Shiva's brother, Bhairabh. Penny will fill in the details.
Another ten minutes and we'd reached the little cluster of teahouses, ours had the stove lit and we spent the afternoon huddled round having lunch and watching the snow. Later when it brightened up we explored around the lakes. The main lake Gossai Kund represents Shiva and there's a small rock in the centre of the lake which is supposed to be the top of Shiva's head. The Hindus come here on pilgrimage in August and bathe in the lake. A few trekkers had a dip, they didn't stay in very long!
