Hello hello hello!
Horrrrra aaaaaaaagggggggghhhhhhhh! !!! I'm in Bali and it's fabulous! I know we're missing a chunk of time but I really can't be bothered to tell you about Cairns as there's not much to say. What I will say is that it was overpriced, hot and I spent most of the time updating the bloody blog. A pint cost as much as in London and that stinks as far as I'm concerned. I think OZ is extracting the michael from it's tourists and in some ways I hope it comes back to bite it on the bum as NZ is coming right up behind you on the hot destinations stakes and for good reason.
So now I have a new continent to play with and it's taken me a couple of days to adjust. I came here 11 years ago with Dan (brother) to see Sean (another brother) who was living out here and boy did I get a cultural smack in the face! I loved it...fell in love with it then and now can hardly believe I'm here under my own steam on such a journey. Every aspect of life here is fascinating...colors textures tastes people architechture clothes...everywhere are endless details piled on top of each other and it takes a while for the eye to adjust to that much visual information.
And now I'm winding down...there's nothing to do here but relax...maybe window shop a little, watch the sunset, decide where to have lunch...Oh and dodge the cockroaches in my hotel room of which I have 2 resident. But it's worth it for the privacy...just to be able to get up when I want and not to have some git russling bags and opening zips at 6am next to your ear. I don't have a shower..I have a tap halfway down the wall and the funny thing is I love that too.
On my first night I met a German guy who's originally from Iran and a fascinating life he's had so far. The first 10 years spent in a war zone and now he's a German citizen studying here for a semester for a economics degree. Although in his mid 20's he's still living with his divorced Mum and helps take care of his disabled brother. I'm not sure if he's still a bit wounded or it's that German thing but this guy doesn't smile a lot. Would really like to meet some girls now...
So I'm just chillin by the pool and eating fantastic food and reading feminist fiction which is probably why I'd really like to meet some girls now. I chat to the odd fellow traveler but most people seem to be in groups and I don't mind my own company after the lack of privacy for so long. Tomorrow I'm looking into going to the Gilly Islands off Lombok that have come with high recommendations from Claire...white sand, clear water and no internet I think so sorry if no blog for a time. I WILL BE ON HOLIDAY! Maybe more on the Bali Bonanza tomoz....x
