“The next Bali” |
We had a one-day layover in Kota Kinabalu. If I'd have known how great it was, I would have scheduled it for longer. There's a big mountain for climbing, great national parks, and best of all a set of islands right off of the city with gorgeous beaches.
We spent our one day at KK on the beach. It was fabulous. The water is the clearest I've ever seen and there were fish everywhere. (In fact, my black and white print swimsuit seemed to attract a bit too much attention from some aggressive looking zebra striped fish.) In the evening we wandered the markets. It was a great day. Later on we learned that many resorts in Bali are moving to KK (a lot of high-end construction was in progress). So I'm betting this place will make it onto Lonely Planet in a year or 2 and will be a major tourist destination in 5 to 10 years.
