Monday morning, I woke up and went to greet Abe who was rummaging through the kitchen. I was getting foods prepared for breakfast. I asked, Abe, where’s the stove and propane tank? Come to find out that someone had stolen it in the middle of the night. We had it at dinner time because we cooked on it and went to clean up afterward and it was there. No one in the village will use it so we think someone brought it to Fort Portal to sell back the propane tank and sell the stove. I also remember that the back light between the duplex and the kitchen wasn’t working that night. It’s possible that someone tampered with it or used it as an opportunity. It kind of pisses me off because I really do find Uganda very safe and friendly and honest. I think that the other places I’ve been are a bit more dangerous and are of higher risk of stealing. I really wasn’t expecting this.
After breakfast, Abe and I decided to report it to Kato—who seems to be running things—just to let him know. We weren’t expecting anything to happen. Of course he wasn’t there but we did find Professor Kasenene who is head of the entire station. We told him of our issues as well as the baboons (it really is only a matter of time before one attacks a human). He seemed so surprised that we had a problem with baboons and theft. He came down with a small army of maintenance workers to see where the stove was stolen and to look at the trash pit and inspect the kitchens. It seemed to be an effective talk—we’ll see if any action comes from it. I hope so, it’s a safety and security issue.
