The ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw was ridiculously expensive. Once on the Island we set up camp at Vivonne Bay, a secluded spot on the southern coast. Apart from some Italian boys camped next to us who played nothing but Queen, it was quiet.

Seal Bay was fantastic. We walked on the beach amongst sea lions, massive bull sea lions slept and little ones played. You can see them surf in on the waves. They gorge themselves on fish and then come in to rest for a few days. This is a unique wildlife encounter. A asked the ranger lots of questions about being a zoologist and learned how the reef protected this sea lion colony from predators (whalers and sharks).

The next day we drove to the tip of the Island to Flinders Chase National Park. Here we saw the New Zealand Fur Seals on the rocks (quite smelly!), an old lighthouse and the Remarkable Rocks. We looked for Platapus but were unsuccessful but did see Koalas up in the trees (KI has ten times more koalas than people).

Paul’s Place , a hobby farm with a menagerie of animals, was a big hit. We started by holding a full grown kangaroo and feeding it milk from a beer bottle! Paul (the host, not me) is a real Aussie bloke. An Emu ate seed from my head. We cuddled Koalas. The girls hand fed roos, sheep, deer, a llama and more. We continued on to Cape Borda and on our return to Vivonne Bay a large bird of prey (hawk or eagle) was slow to take off (preoccupied eating road kill) and our car clipped its wing – quite scary!

The only lowlight was the possum that gate crashed our kitchen 2 nights running.

We returned to West Beach, Adelaide to clean-up and re-stock before venturing inland/ outback.
