This is one of the most beautiful sections of highway in Ontario. It branches off the 401 heading either east or west in the vicinity of the thousand islands and offers a superb view of the St. Lawrence River and the islands within it. There are parks to stop for picnics, resorts with restaurants, and a boat cruise among the islands at Rockport, half way along the route. Near Rockport is a major crossing into the United States over the Ivy Lea Bridge. The bridge itself is a beautiful suspension structure leading to a road that hops from island to island across the St. Lawrence. There is a campsite on an island half way across. Even if you decide not to take this detour, the Parkway itself will only add about 3/4 of an hour to your trip along the 401, as it runs parallel to the highway. It's easy to get to, just watch for the turn off signs along 401 at either Brockville or Gananoque. If you are not in a rush you will want to stop, just to see the view, and you may decide to stay longer, eat a meal and take a cruise. A bycycle path runs in a separate section beside the highway.

If you are travelling towards Toronhto on Ontario Highway 401, or towards Montreal in the other direction, get off at the Thousand Islands Parkway. It's a highway that connects to 401 and has an off ramp just after Gananoque going east, or at Brockville going west. Similar views to the one shown in the picture can be seen all along the Parkway, for it travels beside the river. You can stop at Rockport, have lunch and take a cruise on the river among the Thousand Islands. The view I have shown is at a scenic lookout just beyond Ivy Lea. There are signs directing you to these lookouts, for there is more than one on the highway. You can bring along a bicycle, stash the car for a while, and ride the separate bicycle path on a separate lane. Originally they had planned to make the path the second two lanes of the highway, but thank our lucky stars, they decided not to build it for cars, but for bicycles. May they make more such decisions.
