Almost a year ago, over a cup of coffee, a group of current and ex work colleagues decided to have an adventure. There were six of us in total and we decided to have a short break in Venice. Thankfully one of our number was a wiz with the internet and booking flights and hotels. She did the hard work and found something I didn't think was possible - a cheap holiday in one of the most expensive cities in the world. And it was during the Venice Film festival!
We were there for five days in total and got to see two sides of this wonderful city. Yes we fought our way through the crowds in Saint Mark's Square into the Basilica, Doge's Palace and Bell Tower as well as drinking evening cocktails in Harry's Bar. But we also strolled through the almost deserted back streets, found quiet cafes and bars as well as enjoying an extrodinary view of St Mark's from across the water on the tranquil island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The only problem is there is still so much we want to see.
