The Blue Mosque is about as far away from the beaten track as you'll get in Istanbul, but you absolutely have to see it. It's huge, beautiful and completely overwhelming.

Its six minarets (the most on any mosque in the world) and uncountable domes are a wonder to behold from the outside. Whenever you see Istanbul in the movies or on TV, it's the Blue Mosque you're looking at. It is Istanbul.

Inside is just as good. Entrance is free, but be careful when you go - Muslims pray five times a day and the mosque shuts for about half an hour each time. It's best to go in the morning or before 3-4 in the afternoon.

Please please please remember that this is a place of worship. You get a scarf to cover your head/shoulders/legs  with at the door, but I've seen several tourists take them off once they're inside. Seriously disrespectful.

The rugs covering the floor and the lamps suspended from the rich mosaic ceiling are absolutely awe-inspiring. Sit down, pray, take a few minutes to breathe in the atmosphere (you can even take photos). It's a welcome break from the touristy hustle and bustle of the rest of downtown.

Amazing as the ceiling is, though, you should avoid the temptation to lie on your back and look at it. Many worshippers see this as an insult to God, and you'll probably get told off by a security guard.

But as long as you hold the same attitude of awe and reverence as the people who come there to worship, you'll be fine.
