The people are friendly and eager to please; even when they aggressively try to sell you something, it is mostly good-natured; however, brush up on your bargaining skills. The food is outstanding; kebabs, Turkish meatballs (lamb and beef), fresh fish from the Bosphorus. Be sure to eat in one of the restaurants on the water in the Orkatoy area (I liked Marina Balik) for some of the freshest fish (bass is great) in the world. Nightlife is good from the small cafes to the larger clubs; catch a belly dance even though it can be touristy; it's still fun. Istanbul is one of the finest cities in Europe.
When in a city of 16 million people be prepared to get scammed and that is just what happened to Ry guy..as he strolled the busy streets with a target on his back!! While I am in my interview at a very famous hotel, Ry has met a guy that seems to be asking him for directions. The two hit off and he even asks if Ry is turkish..he totally falls for it and they talk for awhile. He asks Ry where he is staying, but luckily Ry has no clue. Then he invites him to dinner, says he is staying at the penthouse in a very famous hotel and that he would like to go out with us, Ry thinks he is definately gay....and takes his number but is not about to call. He tells me about it when I get back to the hotel, we laugh it off and go to dinner. After dinner we are headed home, and guess who we bump into ...the guy! He convinces us to go out and since I am a little tipsy, I think it's a great idea!
We end up at "Turkish bar" I feel totally underdressed, it is dark and smokey and this guys is trying to order us a bunch of drinks...I'm alarmed by the amount of young georgeous girls with old guys. This guy is staring me down at the other side of the club and the girls don't seem to like me. All of sudden music starts, a belly dancer comes on stage and money starts flying on stage. Ry looks over at me and tells me this is a mens club and wants to leave...the guy is supposedly shocked and trys to get us to stay. Ry says no and he says he will get the bill. They both disappear in the back, while a chick comes up to me and looks like she is going to kill me.....i think i am not supposed to be here unless I am working!!! I go for the door and then Ry grabs me ....and 6 huge turkish guys surround us ...they want us to pay 300$ for 1 drink each....which is ridiculous and they won't let us leave! I get in between the boys...ryan grabs me and we run...scared to death that they are chasing us. What a total set up....thank god he wasn't alone...because the whole night the guy was trying to get rid of me. Of course picture happy me also got a picture with him...which we gave to our hotel staff and authorities.
Not a good first night in Turkey, but the other nights were wonderful, we had a great dinner by the Bosphorous, shopping was exciting and smoking the huka at the local cafe was alot of fun!
