So being my birthday and all, Jeremy upgraded us from backpacking status to cosy hotel with air con, sea views and sparkling pool for the weekend, on a little island just off Cancun´s coast. It was a welcome relief after a couple scruffy places we had stayed in, (we hadn´t the energy to find anything better!) Isla Mujeres reminded me a little of Isle of Wight, maybe because thats where we were last year this time with Kam+John.

Day one was spent checking emails (this took a while, i was pretty overwhelmed with the number of happy bday wishes - thanks again to everyone for remembering me ;) ), from then we floated around the pool, and in the afternoon splashed out on a hiring golf cart to tour the island. The island is approx 8km x 1km, so you wouldnt have thought this would have taken too long, but the golf cart serious didnt go faster than half the speed limit of 40km/hr. So it was a slow cruisy afternoon viewing the turquiose blue waters, and other island scenery.

Day 2 we decided to be more adventurous, and obviously too eager to get back on the saddle, went off to hire bicycles. Niks G, These bicycles were the perfect size for you. We struggled forth, hoping things we would adapt to the tiny frames. The only thing that made me keep my humour, halfway around the island in the stinking heat, was that Jeremy clearly had it worse than me! (sorry J). The cycling itself was great, but rethinking the plan of re-renting anymore along the way, if this size was anything to go by. My butt is still aching from the tiny seat!

We went snorkeling at another little beach, which was awesome. Lots of fishies, which made J very happy. I however learnt a little bit more about myself and my fear of small carribean fish. Cuba, 2 years ago, one cleaner rass fish attached itself to my butt, and i swam to shore trying to shake it off, but it was stuck almost like glue. I have never really got over it. Today, we plunged into the cool water to be met with hundred of tiny pairs of eyes and open mouths. For some reason the little buggers arent scared of humans, and I could swear they were following me. Clearly this amused J no end, though he is concerned about our upcoming scuba course! An hour or so later, it all made sense. (The crazy fish, that is). I had been snorkeling further out and had drifted in, towards a jetty. Suddenly I felt something hit me, small like a pebble. This was followed by many more little pairs of eyes + mouths! (Panic!) The little guys were going mental around the surface of the water, and nothing was going to stop them from getting up there. I surfaced and found a large mexican man laughing and continuing to pelt me with what I can only describe as fish pellets! Apparently the other snorkelers like this, as they get to see all the fishies! I returned the safety of the beach and my book....

the weekend has been absolutely fantastic, lots of sun, sea, snorkeling. I am feeling pretty rejuvenated and looking forward to hitting the next beach, Playa del Carmen, tomorrow! Thanks again Jem for making the weekend so memorable :)

Phil.
