We checked around and it turns out in this area of the state there are very few Hotels and the ones that are there are outrageously priced. Especially if we wanted a separate room for our two kids.
We did some research and found a website www.floridagulfvacation .com that lists properties rented directly from the owners. We called three of the owners and got pricing and found all to be very helpful with information on the area, restaurants, etc. Having never been there before this was a huge asset.
In the end we chose the Beach Cottage property after reviewing photos, speaking to the owner several times and viewing the virtual tour. We paid with a credit card via paypal and received a confirmation packet in the mail that included a great Florida Gulf Vacation t-shirt and a Frisbee for the kids along with the reservation and key pickup information.
We were nervous (and probably drove the guy crazy with our questions) but he was patient, reassured us we were all set and not to worry. We had his personal cell phone should anything go wrong. Nothing Did!
Compared to any hotel we have stayed in in the past, the vacation rental was a god send. We had a washer and dryer, full kitchen, more beds than we needed and the space everyone needed to wind down adn relax.
I will definitely look for a vacation rental the next time we travel. www.vrbo.com seems to have properties all over the world so I will be updating our travels often!
