The Lone Star State...from end to end...
We decided to tackle the state in one day...from El Paso to Houston.
And I can't tell you how many times today we've said, "That's so BIG!"
Hence, the proverbial "everything's big in Texas," I suppose.
The day began with local Mexican radio and our first good look at Mexico in the light of a clear El Paso morning. The freeway took us quickly out of El Paso into the vast emptiness of West Texas where signs of civilization were few. Hawks circling overhead were plentiful though. Mexican radio stations were all we could pick up until we got closer to Fort Stockton where we found only one station - country.
I believe that we can now say that we have seen the worst restrooms in the country. But the children have continued to do so well on this trip - travelling like they've done it their entire lives. They've cheered like mad at each state line, and exclaimed as much as Adam and I at the beautiful and the bizarre.
Olivia asked me today, "Mommy, when we head back home, are we going to go the whole way around the world again?"
We've watched the landscape change all day...it began with the mountains close and rocky, then changed to flat plateaus further in the distance, and gradually into rolling green hills covered in craggy oaks. The air changed too - it was hot and dry when we first got into our car, but now is heavy and smells of childhood summers in the South...
Addison just informed Adam, "Daddy, I see the end. I think you're on the 'wight woad'..."
Houston must be near...
