Housing and NSE took another amazing trip on Saturday, this time to Lapakahi Park and "ABay" which is Anaehoomalu Bay. The day was a bit overcast, but we still enjoyed eachother's company on the bus ride, and the sun made an appearance during our stop to grab breakfast in Weimea... we always stop at this huge strip of restaurants/stores by Parker Ranch, which is pretty much an overblown version of the typical ranch found on that part of the island (Waimea is comprised of small neighborhoods surrounded by cattle fields and horse pastures). I had a big bowl of mashed potatoes for breakfast... I still contend it was the best meal of January 2007. Sometimes when you get a craving, there's no beating the satisfaction of it!

Anyway, after 1.5 hours of driving, we stopped at Lapakahi Park, which is like Sturbridge Village or Plymouth Plantation- only way smaller, cheaper, and there was a rather sturdy looking bar which I don't believe is historically accurate... but it was a cool coastline. My friend Aurora went a little too far to enjoy the waves and almost got knocked in.That was a scary moment, but she turned out to be fine- just got soaked and scraped. My friend Christy and I took some time to sprawl on a shell covered beach and pick through them.

Although the sky was grey, we still were determined to make the day into a beach day. A-bay was elegant, crowned by a huge resort with tidal pools and huge yachts and sailboats anchored yards from the shore. The beach was shaped really oddly, with a huge ridge of sand facing the water- on the other side of the hill was the rest of the beach. The water was a sickly green color in certain parts, and I hope it wasn't pollution because the area is famous for drawing sea turtles.

I'd seen my first sea turtle during an excursion to Richardson's Park the day before. The park embraces a beautiful bay that faces Mona Kea, and is famous for being a great whale and turtle sighting spot. Sure enough, in a little tidal pool we were able to spot 6 turtles, one of which was a little baby who was nuzzling up to a big rock to rest.

Back to "A-bay", I was swimming around enjoying the water (which was warmer than the air that afternoon- it was chilly when the clouds covered the sun) and suddenly right in front of me was a sea turtle, just floating through the water, minding his own business. He swam away quickly as soon as I started moving closer, but it was so cool to see it in real life- sea turtles are so beautiful! In his honor Christy and I built a sand turtle on the beach.
