Our journey to the big island was a one day trip.  We flew in a small airplane from Oahu to Hawaii.  The Big Island is overwhelming with palm trees, volcanos, white sand beaches, black sand beaches, exotic wildlife, and incredible scenery.  We took a guided tour that involved riding, but mostly walking.  We learned about the history of the island, which volcanos are still active, and some common myths.  For instance, it is supposedly "bad luck" (and illegal) to take black sand from the black sand beaches.  Of course, my mom being the brilliant woman that she is decided to take some black sand (which, by the way, is created from ash and lava rock).  I still have it to this day, and to say whether it's actually "bad luck" depends on the day, I suppose!  You could say it was bad luck for her, because immediately after she took it, she fell on some rocks and scraped her knee.  I just love telling people about that because I think it's funny...

On a clear on the big island, Pali Lookout would be the place to be.  You can see for miles and truly capture the essence of Hawaii.  Peering over the vastness of an island makes you feel very small.  You feel free.  You feel peaceful, especially atop Pali Lookout.
