East Memphis is largely a commercial and residential powerhouse. Poplar Ave provides the central east-west thoroughfare of the area, and there are many thriving businesses in and around it. East Memphis is the location of the some of the largest Memphis homes, many churches, and has also has developed into a home for many businesses and law firms. East Memphis is also home to world famous Corky's Barbecue. Further down Poplar Ave, the Oak Court Mall, which has been a shopping mainstay in the area since 1987, can be found. The East Memphis area is host to a plethora of fine dining locations, ranging from the relatively inexpensive yet award winning Huey's, to the finest and most expensive steakhouse in town, Folk's Folly. The University of Memphis sits south of Central Ave and north of Southern Ave, with the "Highland Strip" bordering it on its western side. The Strip is home to several bars, and is the main center of entertainment in the area surrounding the University.
