This small, elegant resort hotel strives to mix modern and traditional, and succeeds admirably. Within an easy stroll of downtown Wolfeboro, the inn dates back to 1812 but was expanded and updated in the mid-1980s. The modern lobby features a small atrium with wood beams, a slate floor, and a brick fireplace, but retains an old-world elegance. Most of the comfortable guest rooms are furnished with Early American reproductions and quilts. Deluxe rooms have better views, and a dozen have balconies as well. The downside: For an inn of this price and quality, it has only a disappointing sliver of lakeshore and just a tiny beach for guests.
