There is a harmonious blend of rustic dwellings in the architecture of the Relais, in which the antique uses have been knowingly re-valued and redesigned, giving full respect to the features passed down over the centuries. Certain antique structures that had been modified or destroyed over the years have been restored. This ancient hamlet dates back to the sixteenth century but the original core appears to have originated halfway through the fourteenth century when it belonged to the Order of St. Stephen. It could have been defined as a resting area and landmark for religious travellers and pilgrims heading towards Chiusi, Castiglion del Lago, and Arezzo. This information supports the theories of historians who believe that the Renaissance settlement was built over early-Christian foundations, which accounts for its exclusively religious use during the late-Middle Ages. It is worth mentioning that even Saint Margaret appears to have rested here after the death of Arsenio, before she permanently settled in Cortona.
