Directions

Ragusa, from its position on the slopes of the Iblei Mountains in southern Sicily, protected its population from attacks by the Greeks, who had established themselves on the coasts. It later became a Byzantine village and was eventually conquered by the Arabs in 848. Ragusa is divided into two zones: the medieval lower city with its characteristic narrow, windy streets, which was rebuilt in the 1700s after a major earthquake; and the modern upper city, divided by a deep ravine and linked by a large staircase. Not to be missed are two important Baroque churches: the Cathedral of 1739, with its imposing fa e, that sits at the top of a grand staircase dominating the entire city; and St. George's, with its stunning fa e composed of three architectural orders.
