More information on Radisson SAS Strand Hotel
We often bypass Radisson SAS hotels, as we prefer Scandinavia's more evocative and atmospheric hotels. But this place has much to recommend it and it doesn't suffer from the curse of bandbox modern. In stark contrast to the angular modernity of many other SAS hotels in Scandinavia, the Strand has a traditional and charming Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) exterior. Originally built in 1912, but with a comfortable and stylish interior that doesn't retain a shred of its original turn-of-the-20th-century embellishment, it lies amid a complicated network of canals and waterways, in a prosperous neighborhood near the Royal Palace. During its most recent renovation, all the antique detailing was ripped out and replaced with a blandly international modernist style. Much of the hotel's clientele consists of business travelers from other parts of northern Europe, who often gather around the big-screen TV in the comfortable lobby, glued to the scores of, for example, the World Cup Football (soccer) match. The bedrooms are outfitted with solid furniture and light pastel colors. Rooms are available in a wide range of sizes; the ones at the lowest end of the spectrum are rather small and have less than comfortable bathrooms. The more expensive rooms are considerably larger and plusher, and come with large beds more suited to North American tastes. All rooms have neatly kept bathrooms equipped with tub/showers. Overall, you'll get the feeling that, although comfortable and more than adequate, the hotel won't appeal to the more socially ambitious -- especially since the Grand Hotel is just a short walk away. Facilities: Restaurant; bar; sauna; 24-hr. room service; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice.
